seatedquartercollectors. Thefirst andonlysub-
stantivestudyofthesedievarieties, Briggs forever
draws thelineinthesand as thereferencepoint for
furtherresearch. Briggs nailedthedievarieties for
most ofthecoins withlowermintages. Forsome of
thehighest mintage coins, diemarriages maywell
numberover ahundred, and Larrymadethewise
decisiontonot insist oncompletionbeforepublish-
ing. As Larrystates inthebook,onecouldtakea
singleissue(1853w/arrows andrays, forexample)
andmakealifetimeofits study. Forthese coins he
has notedthemoreprominent andobvious varieties
foreachdate. Thephotographyinthebookis ex-
cellent andthedetailedillustrations nicelyfacilitate
dieattribution. Thededicatedquarter collectorwill
givethis bookaworkout. Mypersonal copyhas a
tattereddust jacket,other quarter collectors have
reported copies beingso dog-earedthat theyhave
chosentotearoffthe coverandspine andstart all
overagain at thebookbinders.

vorswouldbescarce;butinaserieswhereagreat
manydatesareatleastscarce,thatdoesnotmakethe
issueparticularlyspecial. Yet,itisaspecialcoin –and Figure1. 1848¼dollardoubleddate
onethatisnotalwaysrecognizedassuchbycollectors.
The1848is,arguably,therarestPhiladelphiaseated reversehavingtheso-called“compasspoint”defectin
quarterinmintstate. Itisoneofthekeystoasetof theeagle’sshield(Figure2). Briggs2-Bpairsanob-
Philadelphiaseatedquartersinanygrade,andwithno

Briggs’estimatedrarityofthe1848quarteras
R5(31-75known)inXF/AUandR7(4-12known)in
mintstate. Therewere34examplesreportedbyLSCC
clubmembersinthe1993survey. Onlyoneofthose
exampleswasmintstateandonly3wereAU;eleven
exampleswerereportedinXF. The2007surveyfea-
tured46examples–threeinMS,nineinAU,and14in
XF. Thegradingservices(PCGSandNGC)havecer-
