Abstract Cal'abus,m-unilmalantlsIMuRAisdowngraded toasubspeciesof
Cal'abuS (T,elatOCa1'abuS) a'ae/ SEMENOV-TIAN-SHANSKIJet ZNOJK0, and
a new
subspecies of the latter is described from thesouthern part ofLiaoningProvince,
NortheastChina,underthenameofga二l /Icu◆(,nsl・lnov.Themaleofthesamespecies
isdescribedfor thefirsttime.
Carabusal・actisoneofthemostpoorlyknownspeciesofthegenusCarabus
(s lat ),describedbySEMENov-TIAN-SHANsKuetZNoJKo(1932,p 215)basedon
asingle femalespecimen collected from San-dzjao-dze (Sandaohezi at present,
about 75km distant to the north from MudanjiangofSoutheast He1iongjiang
Province, Northeast China). It is a very strange carabid beetle in having a
combinationofmarkedcychrizationofthemouth-partsanddarkpurplishcolour
ofthedorsalsurfacewiththeelytra1marginsmetallicreddish,andanewsubgenus
was erected for it by thesameauthors at thesame time, under thenameof
Teratocarabus.Later,in1991(p 277),IdescribedataxonCarabus,munumaianus
asanewspeciesbelongingtothesubgenusCychtostomus,alsobasedonasingle
femalespecimen fromtheeasternpart of LiaoningProvince. In 1994, I had an
opportunitytomakeacomparativestudybetweentheho1otypesofboththespecies
whilevisitingtheZoologicalInstituteoftheAcademyofSciences,St.Peterburg,
andrealised thatmyspeciesisconspecificwithCazrae1thoughslightlydifferent
indetails. Theformeristhereforedowngradedtoasubspeciesofthelatterinthe
firstsectionof thispaper.Anyway,bothof thesetaxaseemtobeveryrare,and
noother findinghasbeen reporteduptothepresent. Needlesstosay, themale
of thisstrangecarabidbeetlehasnever beenintroduced tothescience.
Recently, through thecourtesyofMr. Kiyoyuki MlzusAwA, I wasableto
examine a short series of thesamespecies collected from the eastern part of
Gaizhousituated inSouth Liaoning.Theseriescontainedamalewhichmust be
the first for thespecies, and besides, the Gaizhou population was apparently
different fromthetwo knownsubspeciesmainly in theshapeof thepronotum.

Carabus (Cyc/1rostomus) ,nlununlalanus IMuRA, 1991, Elytra, Tokyo, 19, p 277; type locality:
Shuidong, Xiaoshi, BenxiXian,EastLiaoning,NortheastChina.
Closely allied to thenominotypica1subspecies, but discriminated from it
mainlybyhavingdifferentlyshapedpronotum,whichisalittlemoretransverse
(PW/PL148),with thewidestpartbeingsituatedalittlemorebackwards.

Length:23.0-23.5mm.
Thisnewsubspeciesisdistinguished fromthenominotypica1subspeciesand
subsp mizunumalanus IMuRA by the following respects: pronotum slenderer,
PW/PL134-1.35in female(1.43in thenominotypica1subspecies, and148 in
subsp mizunumaianus); hindanglesofpronotumlongerand more triangularly
protrudedposteriad;elevatedpartsofelytra1intervalsalittlewider andalittle
morestronglyconvexabove;striaebetweenintervalsmoreweaklypunctate.
Male. Incomparisonwith female, apicalsegmentsof palpi morewidely
dilated,antennaealittlelonger, reachingbasal thirdofelytra,shouldersalittle
moreeffaced,sides ofelytralessroundlyarcuateespecially inbasal halves,and
thewidestpartofelytraissituatedalittlemorebackwards.Basal threesegments
of foretarsusdilated,withhairpadsontheventralsurface.
Male genitalia. Aedeagus rathersimpleinoutline,with theapical lobe
short,robust,widelyroundedat thetip,andratherstronglycompressed;ostium
lobe very small, uni1obate, and not strongly protruded dorsad; paraligulanot

developed at all; neither basal lateral lobes nor median lobe developed on
endopha1lus,thoughapairofverticallobesatthesidesofpraeputia1pad(Icall
themparapraeputia11obes)arestronglyandsymmetricallydeveloped;praeputia1
padnotsoremarkablymodified, thoughratherstronglypigmentedandslightly
sclerotizedalongthemid-line;aggonoporiusnotstronglysclerotizedbutobviously
protrudedventradat thecentreto formatriangularlyshapedgonopora1plate
withwideV-shapedmildpigmentation.

Notes. Detailedstructureofthemalegenitalorganofthisuniquecarabid
beetlesuggests that it belongs to theMultistriati (sensu IsHIKAwA, 1978), or
to the Lobifera (DEuvE, 1994), and is most closely allied to the subgenus
CychrostomusREITTERofQinghaiandGansu,ashasreadilybeenexpected from
thesimilarityin theexternal features.

井村有希:ムラサキホソキバオサムシに関する知見と雄を含む1新亜種の記載. - ムラサ
キホソキバオサムシCarabus(neratocarabus)azrae1SEMENov-TIAN-SHANsK[JetZNOJ?0は, 中国黑
江省の牡丹江市北方にある三道河子Sandaoheziから得られた1!の標本にもとづいて記載さ
れたもので, 中国産オサムシのなかでももっとも知見の少ない種のひとつである. 筆者は1994
年, サンクト・ぺテルブルクの科学アカデミー動物学研究所を訪れ, 本種の正基準標本を検す
ることができた. その結果, ;i」:f省束部から新種として記載されたCmizunumalanusIMuRAは,
これと同じものであろうという結論に達したので, 本論文の第1節において前者を後者の亜種
に降格した. また, ごく最近, f省南部の盖州近郊から, これら2亜種とは形態的に異なる
集団が発見されたので, 第2節においてこれを新亜種として記載するとともに, これまで未知
であった本種の に関する記載を与えた.

Abstract MajordivisionsandsubdivisionsofthegenusCa;abus(s.lat)arere
visedandanewclassificationisproposedwithdescriptionsofthreenewsubdivisions,i.e.
Latitarsinov.,ArciferinovandProcrustimorphinov.Japanesenamesofall thesubdivi
sionsandsubgeneraaregiven.
Themost recentclassificationof thesupraspecific categoriesbelonging to the
genusCarabus(s lat)isthatproposedbyDEUvE(1994).Hissystemisconstructedon
thebasisofendophalliccharactersofthemalegenitalorgan,the fundamental ideaof
whichhasalreadybeenestablishedbyIsHIKAwA(1973,'78, '79).TheFrenchauthor
divided the genus into five “subdivisions”, namely, Spinulati, Digitulati (=genus
Carabus sensu IsHIK_AwA, 1973), Lipastromorphi (=genus Lipastersensu IsHIKAwA,
1978), Archicarabomorphi (=genus Ischnocarabussensu IsHIKAwA, l979) andLob-
ifera(=MultistriatisensuIsHIKAwA, l978).Throughmyrecentstudyonthetaxonomy
andphylogenyofcarabidbeetles, Ihavebeenabletoexamineallthesubgeneranow
adoptedbymostauthorsandnearlyall thehithertoknownspeciesofthegenusona
worldwidebasis, andhavecome to theconclusion thatDEuvE'ssystemstill involves
somebasicproblemsasmentionedbelow,andthattherestill isroomfor improvement
ormodification,at leastpartly.
Inthefirstplace,thefive“subdivisions”consistingofhissystemarenotcom-
pletelyequivalent intheir taxonomicalvalue.Threeofthem,Digitulati,Lipastromor-
phiandArchicarabomorphi,arephytogeneticallyveryclosetooneanother,andshould
betreatedasawell-definedunit,aswasunifiedbyIsHIKAwA(1978, '79) intoasingle
division,Carabogenici.TheLobiferainDEuvEs' senseisagrouptobeplacedatalittle
higherrankthanthesethree“subdivisions”.Secondly,Istronglyhesitatetoplacethe
Spinulatiatthebeginningofacatalogue.AlthoughmostauthorsafterBREUNINGhave
putthisgroupatthefirstsectionofchecklistsmerelyaccordingtoits“customusage”,
it isdoubtlessmorecloselyalliedto theMultistriati (sensu IsHIKAwA, l978)or tothe
Lobifera,thantotheCarabogenici,notonlyfromtheexternalandgenitalicmorphol-
ogybutalso fromthelarvalcharactersandthemolecularbiological viewpointbased
onanalysisofmitochondrial DNA (cf.SU,1995,pp. 18-19;KAsHIwABARA, 1995,pp.
YukiIMURA
119-123).Itshouldthereforebeplacedatthesideof,orberegardedasamemberof
theMultistriati.Thirdly,theLobiferainDEUvE'ssensecontainstoomanysubgenera
thatseemmoreorlessrandomlyenumerate(i,andwhosephylogeneticrelationshipsare
notclearly indicated. Inmyopinion,itshouldbeseparatedintoseveralsubdivisions
mainlyonthebasisofbasiccharactersofthemalegenitalorgan.
Inconclusion,IproposetodividethegenusCarabus(s lat)atfirstintotwolarge
divisions, theCarabogenici andtheMultistriati. The former containsthreesubdivi-
sions, Digitulati, Lipastromorphi and Archicarabomorphi, eachofwhich is almost
equivalent tothatproposedbyDEuvE, thoughsomewhatdifferentintheconstruction
andsequenceofthecomponentsubgenera. Thelatter isseparated intofivesubdivi-
sions: the first istheSpinulati whichisdowngraded tooneofthesubdivisionsofthe
Multistriati;thesecondisawell-definedcomplexcomposedofHemicarabusandHo-
moeocarabus,whichhasbeentermedtheCrenolimbibyREITTER(1896,p 55); the
thirdisacomplexdefinedbyIsHIKAwA(1984) forasinglegenus,Chaetocarabus,and
I call it Arciferi nov.,after itscharacteristicallydeve1oped ligulum, named “arculus”
(seedescriptionofthesubdivisioninthefollowinglines); theremaininglargepart is
dividedintotwomoresubdivisions,LatitarsinovandProcrustimorphinov.,thoughthe
twogroupsseemtobeverycloselyalliedtoeachother.
Inthefirstsectionofthepresentpaper,Iamgoingtogivedescriptionsofthree
newsubdivisions,thenIwillproposeanewclassificationofmyowninthelatterhalf.
For theconvenienceoffurtherstudies,aboveallthosetobewritteninJapanese,Iwill
givetheJapanesenamesforallthesubdivisionsandsubgenera,mostofwhicharepro-
posedforthefirsttimeinthispaper.Inotherarticlesofminenowunderpreparation,I
amgoingtogivedetaileddescriptionsofall thehigher taxaandkeysto them,aswell
asadiscussiononthephylogeneticrelationshipamongthesehighertaxa.
