Abstract AnewspeciesoftheanthribidgenusPhaulimiaisdescribedfromJapan
underthenameofPtuberosa.Itisarmedwithtwopairsofremarkablehumpsontheelytra.
ThroughthecourtesyofMr.KazuyukiKAwADAofTokyo, Ihaverecentlyhad
anopportunitytoexamineaninterestingspeciesofPhaulimiacollectedfromtheIsland
ofIriomote-jimanearthesouthwesternendofJapan.Afteracarefulexaminatjon,jt
hasbecomeclearthatthisanthribidcanbedistinguishedfromthemostcloselysimilar
SpeCiesHypseusrufttarsisJORDANdescribedfromSumatrabythecolourofantennae,
theshapeofpronotum,thedorsaltransversecarinaofpronotumconsiderablyremoved
fromthebasalmarginofprothorax,thebroadelytra,whicharenotgraduallynarrowed
fromthebasestotheapices,andsoon.Itmustbeanewspecies,andw加bedescrjbed
inthepresentpaper.

robustandnotablyhumpedspecies.
Male. Colourpredominantlyblack,basalhalvesofmandibles,alargepartof
「oSt「urn, antennae,dermof pronota1markings,sub-basal partsofelytraand legs
brown toreddishbrown.Pubescencerelativelydense,blackandpaleyellow;pale
yellowhairsofpronotumformingasmalloblongpatchbeforethemjddleofdorsal
t「anSVerSecarina,andadistinctsquareonebehindthemiddleof thecarjna,black
hairsofeachsterniteformingaroundpatchat thelateralsides.

Pronotumtrapezoidalandconvexabove,about1.25timesaswideaslong,strongly
broadenedanteriorlyinbasalfifth,thensubpara11e1-sided,andgraduallynarrowedin
apicalhalf;discsomewhatswollenatthecentre;dorsaltransversecarinawidelydistant
frompronota1base,bisinuateatmiddle,straightoneachside,andangulatelycon-
nectedwitheachlateral carina,thelatterdeclivous,extendingtoapical thirdofside
margin;carinularelativelylong.Scutellumsmall.Elytrarelativelybroad,about138
times as long as wide, subpara1le1-sided in basal three-fourths, then narrowed
posteriorly,basal marginincurvedat themiddle;discwithtwopairsofremarkable
humpsinsubbasalandmiddleareas,andwithapairofdistinctandthreepairsof
smallones inposterior third;stria1puncturesdeep, theirdiametersmaller than the
widthsofintervals.Pygidiumslightlyinclinedforwards,subtriangular,about1.2times
aswideaslong,lateralmarginsweaklyreflexed,graduallyconvergent towardswidely
roundedapex.
Prosternum deeply punctate, and sparsely covered with pale yellowish hairs;
metasternumweakly punctate, thepuncturessmaller andshallower than thoseon
prosternum.Sternitesweakly punctatesimilarlytometasternum;viewed fromside,
1stto4thvisiblesternitesconjointlyhorizontal,theterminalonesomewhatslanting.
Legsrelativelyslender;anterior femur nearlyas longasthemedianwhichisalittle
shorterthantheposterior;anteriortibianearlyaslongastheposteriorwhichisshorter
thanthemedian;anterior,medianandposteriortarsisubequa1inlengthtooneanother.

Distribution. Japan(Iriomote-jimaIs).
Notes. Because of thepresenceof conspicuoushumps on theelytraand the
peculiarity ofdorsal transversecarina, thisspecies issimilar to Hypseus rufitarsis
JORDAN(1928,p it9) fromSumatra,butcanbedistinguishedfromthelatterbythe
colourofantennae,theshapeofpronotum,thedorsaltransversecarinaofpronotum
considerablyremovedfromthebasalmarginofprothorax,broadelytranotgradually
narrowed frombasestoapices,andsoon.

妹尾俊男:西表島から発見されたPhaulimia属の1新種. - 筆者は最近, 東京都の川田一之氏の
ご好意により, 西表島で採集された比較的幅広で上翅に2対の顕著な瘤をもつPhaulimia属の1種を検
する機会に恵まれた. この種はスマトラから記載されているHypseusrufitarsisJORDAN,1928によく似
てぃるが, 触角の色, 前胸の形態, 前胸背板横隆線が前胸の基部からより離れる, 上翅が比較的に幅
広く, 基部から3/4までほぼ平行, などの点で異なり新種と判断されたので, コブメナガヒゲナガゾ
ウムシPhaulimlatuberosaと命名し, 記載した.

Bodysmall, relativelyroundish,slightlytaperingapically(male)ormorerobust
(female),andfurnishedwithpalefulvouspubescence.
Length:7.7mm(male),7.7-6.2mm(female);breadth:2.0mm(male),2.2-1.7mm
(female).
Color. Bodyalmostdullreddish fulvousto fulvous; headdull reddish fulvous;
mouthparts fulvousexcept for reddishbrown apex ofeachmandible;eyesblack;
antennae dull reddish fulvous; 5thsegment infuscate at apex; 6th and following
segments dark brown; prothorax dull reddish fulvous; scutellum black; coxae,
trochanters, femoraand tibiae fulvous;sometimes tibiaeinfuscate; tarsidarkbrown;
claws reddish brown. Elytra almost yellowish fulvous with black margin; black
markingsalmost wanting. Elytralmarkings:- Latero-basalmarkingoblong,small,
veryfaintlypresent;apicalmarkingverynarrowlypresent.Ventralsurface: - Head
and thoraces almost dull reddish fulvous; meso- and metasterna black; abdomen
fulvous.

(1.07:1);basalmarginweaklybisinuate,obviouslybroader thanapicalmargin(male,
1.40: 1; female, 1.48: 1); pronotum convex above, coarsely punctateandsparsely
clothedwithfinepubescence;posteriorlateralsetaelong;prosternumshining,extremely

clavate, withsubappressedpubescence;hind femurnot reachingelytra1apex inboth
sexes; tibiae linear, with suberect pubescence; tarsi densely clothed with short
pubescenceonundersurface; firstsegmentofmetatarsus longer than the following
two taken together;thirdsegmentstronglydilatedapicallyanddeeplyemarginateat
middleofapex.
Abdomenelongateandgraduallynarrowedtowardsapex;surfaceofeachsternite
denselycoveredwithextremelyfinepubescence;inmale,apexoflaststerniteround
and very shallowly emarginate at middle, apex of last tergite round and weakly
mucronate; in female, apexof laststerniteround, apexoflasttergitetruncate.
Male genitalia: - Median lobe long, relatively slender, weakly sclerotized,
graduallysclerotized towardsapex,moderatelycurvedventrally (Fig 5)andacutely
pointedatapex; lateral lobesdistinctlyshorter thanmedianlobe,deeplybilobedat
apex;eachlobeelongate, relativelyslenderandgentlycurvedinwards;apexofeach
loberound,sparsely furnishedwithshort terminalhairs(Fig 4); endopha11us1ong,
thickand furnishedwithapairoffalcatesclerites;diverticulumrelativelylong,thick
andalmostparallel-sidedwithroundapex.
Femalegenitalia: - Spermatheca fairlysclerotized, broadandsharplybentat
apicalthird,withroundapex;thepartcontinuingtospermathecalductbarrel-shaped
withsomeconstrictions;spermathecalglandlocatedattheoutercorner;thepartcon-
tinuingtospermathecalglandsomewhatswollen;spermathecalduct relativelythick;
vaginaenlargedbasally;valviferalmostparallel-sided;basalsegmentofcoxitegradually
narrowedapically;apicalsegmentofcoxiteroundatapex,weaklysclerotizedateach
innerpartandsparselyfurnishedwithsensorypubescence;styluslarge,broad,rather
heavilysclerotizedexcept for apexandgraduallyenlargedapicallywithsparseand
longhairsatterminal area.

Distribution. Southern Taiwan.
ThisnewspecieswascollectedfromMt.Pei-ta-wuShanat thesouthernpartof
theChung-yangMountainRange. Theverticaldistributionofthisspeciesisshown
inFig.11.Itsdistributionalrangeisverticallylimitedtotheupperpartoftheevergreen
broadleaved forest zone.
Iexaminedatotalof20specimensbelongingtothesubgenusMumonfromMt.
Pei-ta-wuShanandconsidered that they could beclassified into two goodspecies.
These are P binigrosignataHAYAsH1and P. chienhsingisp nov. Accordingto my
investigationmadeonthesouthwesternslopeofMt.Pei-ta-wuShan,P binlgrosignata
isvertically distributed from 1,650 to t,900m in altitudeand is one of the most
dominantspecies.0ntheotherhand,P.chienhsmgiappearsatanaltitudeof2,050m.
ThesetwospeciesseemtobeallopatricindistributiononMt.Pei-ta-wuShan.

Remarks. Thisnewspeciesiscloselyallied toPidonia formosanaTAMANuKlet
MIToNo,butcanbedistinguished fromthelatterby the followingkey:
1. Medianlobeofmalegenitaliastronglycurvedventrally;eachlobeoflateral lobes
relatively broad, weakly bending inwards at apical fourth; temples weakly
expanded,gentlycurved inposterior halves;prothoraxshallowlyconstricted

Bodysmall, relatively roundish,slightlytaperingapically(male)ormorerobust
(female),and furnishedwithpalefulvouspubescence.
Length: 8.6-7.4mm (male), 9.5-7.9mm (female); breadth: 2.2-1.8mm (male),
2.6-2.1mm(female).
Color. Body almost yellowish brown to fulvous; head yellowish brown;
mouthparts fulvousexcept for reddishbrownapex ofeachmandible;eyes black;
antennaeyellowishbrown;5thsegmentinfuscateatapex;6thandfollowingsegments
darkbrown;prothoraxyellowishbrown;scutellumblack;coxae, trochanters, femora
andtibiaefulvous;sometimestibiaeinfuscate;tarsidarkbrown;clawsreddishbrown.
Elytraalmostyellowish fulvous;blackmarkingsalmostwanting. Elytra1markings:-
Sutural marking very narrowly present, sometimes entirely lacking; 1atero-basal
markinglinear-oblong,small,veryfaintlypresent.Ventralsurface: - Head and tho-
racesalmostyellowishbrown;meso-andmetasternadarkened;abdomen fulvous.
Structure. Headalittlebroaderacrosseyesthanbasalwidthofprothorax(male,
1.06:1)orasbroadasbasalwidthofprothorax(female);terminalsegmentofmaxillary
palpusbroadenedapically,obliquelytruncateatapex,withslightlycurvedoutermargin
inmale; terminal segment ofmaxillarypalpusclub-shaped, gradually broadened in
basalhalfandnarrowedtowardsapex,obliquelytruncateatapex,withcurvedouter
margin in female; temples somewhat developed, almost impunctate and shining,
graduallynarrowedposteriorlyinanteriorhalvesandgentlyconstrictedinposterior
halves, with several setae; frons subvertica1and transverse, covered with coarse
punctures,bearingafinebutdistinctmedianlongitudinalfurrowextendingbackwards
to vertex; vertex weakly convexabove, rather shining, sparselyand finelypunctate
andsparselyclothedwithlongpubescence;gulashining,verysparselyclothedwith

Eyesrelativelyprominent,moderatelyfacetedandshallowlyemarginateatmiddle

(male,1.11:1;female,1.08:1);basalmarginweaklybisinuate,obviouslybroaderthan
apical margin (male, 1.45: 1; female, 1.48: l); pronotum convex above, coarsely
punctate and sparsely clothed with fine pubescence; posterior lateral setae long;
prosternum shining, extremely thinly clothed with short pubescence; meso- and
metasternafinelypunctate,denselyclothedwithfineappressedpubescence.Scutellum
smalland triangular,slightlylonger thanbroadandbearingthinpubescenceonthe
surface.Elytra2.54times(male)or2.35times(female)aslongasbasalwidth,gradual-
