hotspringsome70kmwestofTokyo.Duringthat time,hepractisedpainting, firstof
landscapesandlateroflivingthings,mostlyofinsects.Hebegantocollectbutterflies
andlongicornbeetlesasthesubject forpainting,andafter1960,hebecamespecial-
izedindrawingwithpenandink.InJuly1964,hegotmarriedtoHidekoHAsEGAwA
andsettledinFunabashiCityeastofTokyo.Heneverwentbacktoschools,andstud-
iedeverythingbyhimself.
Towardstheendofthe1970's,hebecameinterestedmoreandmoreintheground
beetles,butunlikebutterfliesand1ongicornbeetles,manygroundbeetlesbeforehis
eyesdidnotreadilydisclosetheirscientificnames.Itwasdifficulttoidentifythemcor-
rectlywithoutproperliteratureandidentifiedspecimensforcomparison.Hethenvis-
itedAkinobuHABU,thebestJapanesespecialistofgroundbeetlesat thetime,atthe
NationalInstituteofAgriculturalSciences,andlearnedmanythingsaboutcarabidtax-
onomy.In1982,hewasassignedtoaneditorialassociateoftheCole〔)pterists'No、レ,1s,a
newsletter inJapanesepublishedbytheJapaneseSocietyofColeoptero1ogy,anda量er
then, frequentlywasattheNationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist),Tokyo,notonlyfor
editorial arrangements but also for learning carabid taxonomy, particularly after
HABUs' retirement.HeservedtheSocietyasacouncilor fili i998,whenhebecame111
withParkinsons' syndromeandwasunabletohandlehispen.
The1980s' andthefirsthalfofthe1990s' werethepeakofhiscareer.Hewasal-
readyanestablishedartistspecializingininsectsandotherlivingthingsandwaswell
knownamongeditorsofmagazinesforboysandgirls.However,hestudiedhard fora
carabido1ogistundermysupervision - howtoidentifyspecimens,howtodissectthem
forexamininggenitalia,howtofindoutnecessaryliterature,howtowritescientificpa-
pers,etc.,etc. In1984,hisfirstacademicpaperwaspublishedintheElytra,dealing
withtwopanagaeines fromtheRyukyus. After that,heconstantlypublishedseveral
papersayear.HefirsttookupthePanagaeinaeandCa11istinae,thentheLicininaeand
Harpalinae,andat thesametimethePterostichinaeincluding thePlatyninae. Inhis
lastyears,hedevotedhimselfalmostexclusivelytothestudyoftheJapanesespecies
ofthetribePterostichini,winglessmembersofwhichhaveaccomplished incredibly
complicatedraciationandspeciationnotyetclarifiedsatisfactorily.Forgainingaclear
comprehensionoftheirdifferentiation,itisindispensabletogatherasmanyspecimens
aspossiblefromalloverthecountry.KAsAHARAwastryingtodothis,andalreadyac-
cumulatedalongseriesofmaterialcontainingnewforms.Unfortunately,hewasun-
abletohandle fragilespecimensafter1997andlosthisskill indrawingfinesketches
duetoconsiderabletremblingofhishandscausedbyParkinson'sdisease.
Asacouncilor,he contributed tothedevelopmentof theJapaneseSociety of
Coleoptero1ogy.HemadethecoverdesignofitsjournalElytra,anddrewcoverfigures
for Volumes17(1989) to24(l996),27(1999)and28(2000), thoseofthelatter two
volumeshavingbeenadoptedfromhisearlierworks.Inmemoryofhiscontributionto
theSociety, oneofhislatest works,the figureofTrechiamawatanabeorumS. UENo
fromNortheastJapan,isadoptedforthecoverillustrationofthepresentvolume(Vol.
30).Healsomanagedshortcollectingtripsorganizedby theSocietyonceinevery

year,andenjoyedtheeventheartilyasisshowninthepictureattheheadofthisarticle.
KAsAHARA wasapromoterofyoungamateurbeetle-loversandalwaysencouraged
themtocollectandstudygroundbeetles.
KAsAHARA's health became undermined towardstheend of the 1990's. Besides
Parkinson'sdisease,anoropharyngealcancerwasfoundinhisthroatinOctober2000,
sothathewastakentohospital forreceivingradiationtreatment.However,gastriccan-
cerwasdetectedinMarchthenextyear,andthoughheunderwentanoperationforthe
removalofthemalignanttumor,hisconditiontookaturnfortheworse. ItwasonSep-
tember29,2001thathepassedawayinsecret.
ThroughthecourtesyofhiswidowHideko,KAsAHARA'scollectionofinsectswas
donatedtotheDepartmentofZoology,NationalScienceMuseum(Nat.Hist),Tokyo.
Becauseofbeingleftunattended formorethanhaifadozenyears, fairlymanyspeci-
mens in thecollectionwerecoveredwithmouldandsomeweredamagedby der-
mestids,butasawholeitisinagoodshape.Itwillbeincorporatedintothemuseum
collectionwhenthecleaningisfinished.Needlesstosay,alargepartofthecollection
isoccupiedbypterostichinecarabids,manyofwhicharenotyetstudied. Ihopethat
KAsAHARA'sstudyonJapanese ightlesspterostichineswouldbesucceededbysome
youngJapanesecoleopterists.
