Strutturata in forma di dialogo tra un Ospitaliero (cioè un cavaliere dell’Ordine degli Ospitalieri di San Giovanni in Gerusalemme) e un Genovese (nocchiero di Colombo), delinea l’immagine di una società perfetta, che sembra trarre la propria ispirazione da una sapiente unione di scienza e magia. Le pagine più note e più citate dell’opera sono quelle dedicate al tema del comunismo dei beni e delle donne. Tommaso Campanella nato nel 1568 a Stilo, in Calabria, entrò nell’Ordine dei Domenicani. Tra il 1592 e il 1597 fu sottoposto a quattro processi per eresia. Nell’estate del 1599 ordì una sedizione che avrebbe dovuto liberare la Calabria dal dominio spagnolo. Arrestato, torturato, si finse pazzo scampando così alla pena di morte. In carcere, a Napoli, scrisse gran parte delle sue opere. Liberato nel 1626 dagli spagnoli, fu fatto nuovamente imprigionare, per tre anni, dal Nunzio apostolico. Dal 1634 fino alla morte, avvenuta nel 1639, visse a Parigi, godendo i favori di Luigi XIII e di Richelieu.
