Series Editor's Foreword
Twenty years have passed since Sidney Licht published the first edition
of this unusual book. Then it was Massage, Manipulation and Traction;
now the order of topics is changed in the title to reflect the changing
emphasis of modern times. Of the original contributors, a few remain.
Currentcontributorsinclude today'sworldauthorities, includingDr. Rogoff
himself. He graciouslyacceptedmyinvitationto editthesecondeditionand
was fortunate to recruit the incomparable Sidney Licht as an author. Alas,
Dr. Licht did not survive to see this new edition of which he would have
beenproud. We mournhis deathin 1979, shortlyafterthe equallysad death
ofhis wife and publisher Elizabeth.
A major contribution ofthis new edition is its great emphasis on manip-
ulation. Dr. Maigne's work in France has not been fully appreciated else-
where. His lengthy contribution, well translated and edited by Dr. Rogoff,
is an authoritative presentation. Hinterbuchner's chapter on Traction and
Cyriax's revised and updated chapter on Massage are equally significant.
Unrivaled chapters by Wynn Parry, Kamenetz, and Hofkosh round out a
unique volume in our RehabilitationMedicine Library series.
