Needles of Stone
Within the last decade, surprising evi-
dence has been amassing that our pre-
historic ancestors, so long assumed to
have been little more than ignorant sav-
ages, knew far more about nature’s
energy patterns than we do now. Detailed
surveys of the megalithic structures built
four or five thousand years ago reveal the
extraordinary astronomical and geomet-
rical knowledge of their builders.
Needles of Stone takes this research a
step further, and in a new direction. Tom
Graves demonstrates how he and his fel-
low dowsers can detect the natural energy
patterns and flows associated with
megalithic structures. Starting from an
examination of the work of Alfred Wat-
kins and Guy Underwood he builds a
more comprehensive picture of the
earth’s energy patterns than has pre-
viously been attempted. As a result we
are shown possible links between energy
flows and ley lines, and traditional beliefs
in ghosts, magicians, nature spirits and
demons. Drawing parallels between his
findings and Chinese acupuncture and
geomancy — systematic alteration of the
landscape — he shows how megalithic
man could have used, or been used by,
this knowledge to control the weather and
improve the quality of life.
Graves discusses the implications of this
for our present civilisation, and shows
how the knowledge of the past can help us
now. Needles of Stone is a search for a
magical technology – one that worked in
the past, and is still at work in the present
day.
It is also, in a sense, a plea for a return to
paganism; at least in as much as this
implies a healing of the split between man
and nature, town and country. For, as
Tom Graves shows in this radical and
imaginative book, at the moment it is man
who is the loser.
