Above all, what is missingfrom the world is asense ofwhatis in operation as the
world. Even so, it can be stated without hesitation that each ofus is involved (or
ought to be involved) in an ongoing process ofself-invention. Ifeach person
must invent herselffurther out ofwhat she has at her disposal, we should at least
have readily available a reference guide to all that a person can possibly rally to
the cause ofbeing a person. When I assign a meaning to something, I do it on
the basis ofwhat? In this, as in all instances, the questioner herselfis the big
question, the greater context. Being a person is an astounding event or
series of events. Astounding in its variegated ordinariness. Does variegated
ordinarinessexistonlyalwaystodwindleawaytowardadrearyend?Whyshould
the astounding series of events that is a person have to come to an end? But in
regard to a whole person, what constitutes the whole ofit? The body-person
cannot be studied apart from her surroundings. What wields itself as the
architectural body? To what extent do architectural surrounds guide behavior?
Can architectural inflection of thought and feeling be calibrated precisely?
