Sinossi<p>Carlo, re dei Franchi, ha ripudiato Ermengarda, figlia di Desiderio, re dei Longobardi. Ermengarda torna dal padre e chiede di potersi chiudere in convento per trovare conforto nella preghiera. Un messo di Carlo intima a Desiderio di restituire le terre tolte al pontefice. Il re risponde sdegnosamente e la guerra è dichiarata. Alcuni duchi longobardi sono pronti a tradire. Nel campo dei Franchi giunge il diacono Martino a rivelare l'esistenza di un valico che permette a Carlo di prendere di sorpresa i Longobardi. Adelchi si difende strenuamente; intanto Ermengarda muore in convento a Brescia. Un traditore apre ai Franchi le porte di Pavia, ultimo rifugio dei Longobardi. Giunge, morente, Adelchi che ha deciso di combattere fino all'ultimo. Considerato uno degli esempi più alti del teatro romantico italiano, l'Adelchi mette in scena una ricostruzione storica minuziosa, ma anche una trasfigurazione spirituale nella ricerca della "verità" dell'uomo al di là della semplice concatenazione delle sue azioni. In appendice gli "Appunti" per la stesura di una terza tragedia - lo "Spartaco" poi abbandonata da Manzoni. </p>
