Introduction
Of all the people my high school students, my staff members, and I have documented and shared with the outside world since 1966, none has been more warmly 
embraced than Arie Carpenter. Though she has been dead for years, wherever I go with my students on speaking engagements—be it Alaska, Oklahoma, California, 
Maine, or wherever—someone will surely come up to one of us and inquire about her health. She is the only person we ever wrote about whose personality was so 
strong and whose face was so compelling that she literally walked off the pages of The Foxfire Book and into the lives of the millions who read it. I've looked at that 
modest chapter about her in wonderment scores of times since that book's publication, trying to unravel the mystery of the reception she received, and it still eludes 
me. Of the fact that an afternoon with her was magic there is no question. That so many others who never met her responded to her—apparently as strongly as we 
did—through a mere ten pages of cold type and five two­dimensional black­and­white photographs is a mystery I'll continue to probe for the rest of my writing and 
teaching career.
Arie Cabe was born on a farm on December 29, 1885, in Macon County, North Carolina, to Christine Tilithia Henson and Davie Leander Cabe. She had four 
brothers—Mount, Lindsey, Randy, and Hillard. In her ninety­two years, she never left Macon County except on short visits, and if these ever took her farther than 
thirty­five miles from home, she never told us about it.
She married for the first and only time when she was thirty­eight. The man she married, Ulysses, was also from Macon County, the son of Avie and Bud Carpenter. 
He had been married once before, to Ada Garland. Ulysses and Ada had moved to the state of Washington, where they had a daughter named Dovie. When Ada 
died of tuberculosis in Washington, Ulysses and Dovie moved back to Macon County, and shortly thereafter Ulysses and Arie married. Dovie grew up, married, 
moved away and virtually disappeared, returning for a brief visit about a year before Arie died. She did not return for the funeral.
Arie and Ulysses tried to have children, but she was beyond childbearing age. Their one baby was premature and stillborn—probably when Arie
