This volume contains the revised versions of selected papers presented during
the 36th Annual Conference (GfKl 2012) of the German Classification Society
(GesellschaftfürClassification-GfKl).TheconferencewashostedbytheUniversity
of Hildesheim, Germany, together with the Otto-von-Guericke-University of
Magdeburg,Germany,inAugust2012.TheGfKl2012focusedonadvancesindata
analysis,statistics,knowledgediscoveryandmachinelearning.Problemsfromdata
analysis in marketing, finance, biostatistics, bioinformatics and interdisciplinary
domainswereconsidered.Besides9plenaryandsemi-plenarytalks,morethan130
talkstookplacein3days.Withparticipantsfrom20countriesthisGfKlconference
providedonceagainaninternationalforumfordiscussionsandmutualexchangeof
knowledgewithcolleaguesfromdifferentfieldsofinterest.
Inrecentyears,wesawthecoretopicsoftheconferencecrystallizethemselves
intothematic areas.In 2012,forthe first time, these areasweremadeexplicitand
