The Canadian Association for HIV Research (CAHR) welcomes
you to the 27th Annual Canadian Conference on HIV/AIDS
Research (CAHR 2018).
y As happens each year, those working in all disciplines of HIV/

d AIDS research, as well as policy makers, persons living with
s
r HIV and other individuals committed to ending the pandemic,
u
h will come together in Vancouver to share the outcomes of
T
new research, honour new investigators and acknowledge the
achievements of major contributors to the field. CAHR 2018
will also allow us to formally pay tribute to HIV research pioneer
Dr. Mark Wainberg, one of the founding members of CAHR as
y well as friend and mentor to many, whose ongoing commitment
a
d to the cause is sorely missed.

CAHR extends it gratitude and appreciation to the members
of the 2018 Conference Scientific Committee for developing a
strong program. In line with this year’s theme of “Celebrating
our Diversity: Uniting in the Response to HIV” we join together
y to hear new scientific knowledge and exchange ideas through
a
d structured and spontaneous dialogue on the major issues
r
u facing the global response to HIV.

S CAHR is also pleased to highlight a number of changes
that were developed in response to ideas put forward by the
membership. It is our hope that these changes better align
the Conference structure with the current needs of HIV/AIDS
researchers in Canada and the face of the epidemic. Changes
y
a include: additional oral abstract sessions that will allow more
d
n cutting-edge research to be presented and a more dynamic
u
S Sunday program; a greater focus on key populations that will
include a dedicated oral abstract session on Saturday; and
waiving the registration fees for community members.

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you to Vancouver, also
known as “the best place on earth” for CAHR 2018. We also
wish to acknowledge that we are on the unceded territory of the
Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations. E

This year is the 27th edition of the Conference, and we think ib
it is timely that two women are co-chairing CAHR this year. itio
We all know that HIV takes no prisoners, and affects people n
indiscriminately of age, race or gender. Together we have made
great strides, both on the prevention and treatment fronts. There
are now close to 20 million people accessing antiretroviral
T
treatment. Pre-exposure prophylaxis and antiretroviral therapy h
u
are preventing new infections, and we are getting closer in r
s
our search for an effective vaccine, and a cure. Over the past d
a
decades, the face of HIV research has also evolved. More y
than ever, members of the community and key affected
populations are integral to the research taking place. At CAHR
2018, we endeavour to acknowledge and celebrate diversity
among people with lived experience of HIV, and among HIV
F
researchers. In this quest against HIV, we have learned that rid
we can accomplish more when we work together, when we a
y
embrace our diverse experiences, perspectives, and ideas;
hence our conference theme this year: Celebrating our
Diversity: Uniting in the Response to HIV.
In this spirit, this year will see a full oral session on Sunday
morning, and we are introducing a new 5th oral session on Sa
Saturday morning. This session will be interdisciplinary across tu
r
all four tracks, and focused on four key populations affected by d
a
HIV. These program changes may be maintained in future years y
so we would really welcome your feedback. In addition to our
plenaries, we will also hold special sessions on a diversity of
research topics; there will be something for everyone.

for their hard work preparing for this conference, and all nd
those who contributed to reviewing abstracts and scholarship ay
applications. Congratulations to all the Academic and
Community Scholarship recipients.
