Am 13.11.1885 erklärt Serbien Bulgarien den Krieg; nach Kämpfen bei Slivnica werden die Serben bereits am 27.11.1885 bei Pirot geschlagen; am 3. März 1886 wird in Bukarest der Friede geschlossen. Knapp 10 Jahre später schreibt der irische Dramatiker George Bernard Shaw sein Theaterstück "Helden", in der er sich gegen alles militaristische Gehabe wendet und den Heroismus seiner Zeit gründlich demontiert. Er zeigt "Soldaten, die Schokolade statt Patronen in der Tasche haben und heulen, wenn man sie ausschimpft; und Schlachten, die durch lach- und glückhafte Versehen gewonnen werden." In der Urfassung verwendet er keine geographischen Details, keine Orts- und Personennamen - die Rollen heißen einfach Mädchen, Mutter, Hauptmann usw. Durch seinen Freund Sidney Webb lässt er sich "einen passenden Krieg" heraussuchen - eben den serbisch-bulgarischen! Gerade durch diese Entstehungsgeschichte wird das Stück aber zeitlos und allgemeingültig und avanciert zu einem wahren Bühnen-Evergreen.
