En 1993, David Weber crée le personnage d’Honor Harrington à la demande de l’éditeur américain Jim Baen qui recherche un auteur capable de créer une série de science-fiction militaire. Bien que personnage féminin, Honor Harrington sera rapidement qualifiée d’Horacio Hornblower de l’espace, en référence au héros des romans de guerre maritime de C.S. Forester, auteur admiré par David Weber. Le succès sera immédiat !
