This book is for readers who enjoy short fiction. In fact, it's a collection of short works.

The main event is "The Penny Jumper," my first novella. "So what's a novella?" you ask. No, it's not a TV soap opera in Spanish. It's a work of fiction that is shorter than a novel but longer than a short story.

Also in this collection is "Death, Cheated," a Jack Swyteck short story that I wrote years ago, when my editor and I were deciding whether Jack--introduced to readers in "The Pardon" (1994)--should return as a serial character. Fans of the Jack Swyteck series will notice that this short story is written in first person. It's the only "Jack Swyteck" story you will read in first person. My editor and I ultimately decided to go with third person when we launched the series.

I've also included "Green Eyed Lady," a short story featuring FBI Agent Andie Henning. Andie debuted in "Under Cover of Darkness" (2000). After much debate with my editor on "the right woman" for Jack, we made Andie part of the Jack Swyteck series.

Finally, there is "Sammy and Me," a short nonfiction tribute to this writer's four-legged companion for my first ten novels. This heart-felt tribute first appeared in newsapers after Sammy's passing in 2006. Anyone who has ever had a special relationship with a pet will relate.

I hope you will enjoy this collection and will appreciate this author's effort to serve up something different. For those purists who enjoy only longer works, look for "Most Dangerous Place"--my twenty-fifth full length novel--coming in February 2017.
