This book is a "Middletown" or,
rather, a "Bigtown" of world revolu-
tionary propaganda in America. The
scene is one of the great industrial
cities of the nation and the world: Chi-
cago. The time is the GreatDepression.
The leading character is the propa-
gandist of Communism. The purpose
is to give the facts and to tell what
mean.

For this book is first of all a fact-
book. Every available source is used.
The publications and confidential re-
ports of the Communist Party; the rec-
ords of the police; the testimony of
members, ex-members, and observers:
all are drawn into the investigation.
And these facts are given by methods
which are both precise and original.
The slogans of Communist propaganda
are shown word for word. Changes are
tabulated from year to year. The pro-
portion of "hate" words and "love"
words, of "American" words and "for-
eign" words, of "personal" words and
"impersonal" words are counted.
"Symbol" indices are put side by side
with the "price" indices of economists.
New indices show the changing volume
of Communist propaganda. And the
book analyzes facts. It names the fac-
tors which "facilitate" and which "re-
strict" the spread of propaganda. It
