âYou know.â I kicked my heels idly against Electraâs sides. âI always wished I could speak Spanish.â
Beneath me, hands clasped around my thighs, Electra huffed, though not from my weight of course. âSpanish?â
âMy mom was from Ecuador.â I shifted again, flexing my core as my hands did their dastardly work. âBut she wouldnât teach me any, wanted me to grow up speaking English. Mainly because of my complete imbecile of a father, but still.â
âYouâd think you couldâa learned it on your own.â
I pouted, pressing forward slightly. âI suck at languages. Of course, I picked up a bit butââ My shiv screeched against the stone, and I slipped.
Electra swore, taking half a step forward as I threatened to tumble off her shoulders. âGodâheckingâdarnit, Empress!â
I placed a hand against the wall, pushing myself upright. âSorry.â Looking closer, I could see the brick in the corner had a nice long scratch going across the middle of it. Right through something that looked
like the runes Maarin had shown me.
I scraped at it for a bit more, before the shape fizzled, glowing briefly once, then sputtering out. I grinned. âGot it.â
âJeez Louise.â Electra shifted, half kneeling and half shrugging me off of her back. I slipped nimbly back to the ground, and if anyone said otherwise, they were a lying liar who lied.
Completely unrelated, Electra caught my wrist before I could faceplant into a wall. âThat did it?â she asked.
âShould have.â I took my arm back, brushing off my undersuit. Today, with Electraâs help, weâd done a complete canvassing of the cell. That one enchantment in the corner was the only thing we could find; luckily, weâd spotted it before the light vanished completely, and the moon had given me enough to work by for chipping it off.
We could speak freely.
Electra tilted her head and looked at me. âYou know, I never really thought about you as Latina.â
I paused, blinking once, then again. I sighed. âAnd we were doing so well too.â
âWhat?â
I shook my head. âDonât worry about it.â It was just one more thing Iâd blackmail her with later. âFor now, do you think you can short out our handcuffs?â
She squinted at me for a moment longer, before shrugging. âI donât know.â She rolled her wrist, the silver shackle glinting in the light. âYou saw when they put it on you, right?â
I grinned with the promise of savage vengeance. âThey knocked me out.â
And I would remember that.
Electra shifted. âUh, Emâ youâre kinda freaking me out here.â
I smoothed my features into something more socially acceptable. âI have no idea what youâre talking about.â
She groaned. âAnd you say ânormal youâ and âsuper evil happy fun time youâ are the same person?â
âThey are.â
Electra rolled her eyes. ââTheyâ, sure.â I smiled beatifically up at her. âAnyway, a wizard did something weird with it, and then it kinda melded together seamlessly.â She ran her finger around the edge of the shackle, tracing its smooth surface. âIâm not sure what you want me to do here.â
I hummed. âHow good are you at inducing magnetic fields?â
She blinked, instantly catching onto my plan. âYou think I can shatter it?â
âSilver
highly conductive, isnât it?â I smirked. âAnd last I checked, you werenât constrained to actual circuits or anything, just⦠run it parallel to the band.â I twirled my finger in the air. âMake two magnetic fields that shear at each other at great enough intensity, and
Oh, sure, I was simplifying a bit, but Iâd also seen Electra fry Câthulu when she had enough charge, and sheâd been going hard with the generator the last couple of days.
Usually, when you wanted the impossible, it was best to leave the fine details up to the heroâs imagination.
She frowned at the silver band on her wrist, sparking slightly as she fed electricity through it, arcs jumping from the metal to her skin and back again. I knew it wouldnât reduce her charge; she wasnât quite a perpetual motion
, but she had nearly perfect charge retention as long as it arced back to her.
I wasnât kidding when I called her a human shaped superconductor, and at room temperature no less!
âMaybe,â she said quietly. The moonlight cut a sharp line across her features. âBut itâs metal, if it buckles and warpsâ¦â
I hummed. âWhatâs a little blood between friends.â
She chuckled. âBe the first time weâre shedding blood
each other.â
âNot true.â When Electra glanced over at me, I smiled. âThere was that time at the beach. I never did thank you for it, huh.â
She blinked, looking at me for a moment, before running a hand through her hair. âYeah, I guess we did stick it out then.â She nodded sharply. âSo, when do you want to stage our prison break?â
I sighed, sitting down on the floor. âNot yet.â
She cocked an eyebrow, sliding to the ground across from me. âWhat are we waiting for, then?â She made a show of looking around. âNot like weâre gonna get a much better chance.â
âIf theyâre expecting something, theyâd be expecting it tonight.â Idly, I reached out and pulled the pouch containing the hand mirror into my lap. It must have been nearing midnight now, the moon rising ever higher, until only a silver sliver spilled through our window. âAnd weâre not the only pieces on the board.â
She bit her lip, looking at the dark mirror in my hands.
âWhen did she say she was going to call?â
I smiled. Still, despite the late hour, my heart was at ease. âWe barely got to this part, when we spoke about it. I thought weâd have more time to set up something, but if Rel needs more time, sheâll have it.â I leaned back against the cold stone wall. âIâm not going to spoil my own scheme this time.â
Electra snorted. âBeen there a bit too often, Emâ?â
I flicked her ear. âDonât call me that.â
Electra pouted at me, rubbing her ear. âYou didnât seem to mind last time.â
âYes, well, last time your head was between my legs.â I gave her a cheery smile. âI tend to be more forgiving in circumstances like that.â
She sputtered for a second. âLike I would ever go downâ!â
Beyond the walls of the cell, the bells in the center of the city chimed once, a long, mournful note. Midnight. The mirror shivered once in my hand, and we both paused.
ââVia.â A picture slowly formed in its depths. âLady Via!â
I felt a smile steal unbidden across my face. âRelia.â
She sketched a brief bow, head bobbing in the mirror frame. âLady Via.â Her eyes glanced towards the edges of the frame. âAre you alone?â
âWell, they managed to catch Electra and throw her in with me.â I waved a hand. âI assume you had something to do with that?â
Rel looked down sheepishly. âI was hoping sheâd get away.â
Electra snorted. âNo she wasnât.â
Relâs head snapped up, and it was funny to see her glare towards the top of the mirror, like she was peering out of it upside down. âWell, maybe if you were a bit
on the uptake.â
âNow, now.â I tapped the mirror once. âPlay nice, both of you. Besides, it wasnât all bad.â I smirked at my erstwhile nemesis. âElectra was just talking about how sheâd neverââ
âHabah-ba-ba-ba!â Electra leaned forward, arms waving. âThat wasâthatâs not important.â
Rel frowned again. âWhatâs not important?â
âIâll tell you when youâre older.â I smiled, leaning back so that Electra was no longer in view. âSo, are we ready?â
Rel crossed her arms, but I simply waited.
Iâd been waiting all day, after all.
After a moment, she sighed. âDee and Dum have rounded up everyone. We even managed to use some of the street rats and these mirrors to get more information." She gave a sharp nod. âThatâs why I couldnât reach out to you earlier, Lady Via. There is a reason the Adventurerâs Guild moved against us so quickly.â
I raised an eyebrow. âGo on.â
She took a slow breath. âTheyâre not the only group of armed thugs in Silverwall,â she said. âThereâs the Guard of course, but theyâre better armed, and better centralized. Beyond the Guildâs reach.â
I nodded. âSo who were they after, to need so many⦠practice weapons from me?â
âThe other guilds in the city have leg breakers of their own, especially the Enchanterâs Guild. The Adventurerâs Guild plans to change that.â
I blinked, before a wide smile broke out across my face. âWhen?â
Rel paused, looking off to the side. âWellâ¦â
âRel, tell me when.â
âTomorrow.â
I laughed. I couldnât help it.
âLady⦠Via?â
When I came back to myself a moment later, even Rel was looking at me oddly. Electra had gone so far as to scoot back across the cell.
âDonât mind me.â I wiped the tears from the corners of my eyes. âThatâs perfect. Oh, it couldnât be any better if I planned it myself.â I looked back to the mirror. âYou know where theyâre going to go?â
Rel let out a breath, before a smile started growing on her face. âYes, Lady Via. We do. They plan to start with the Enchanterâs guild, as they have the most support.â
At that, my own answering smile grew even more savage. âAnd they want your support?â
âThey do.â
âPerfect. And the other groups? I donât imagine theyâre going to wait around.â
Rel nodded. âFrom what we have managed to overhear, there will be several other groups going out at once, to hit the smaller guilds.â
I nodded. âAnd our friend, Arlo?â It had been a while since Iâd heard from the leader of the Tarnished, the other big gang in the docks.
At that, Rel glanced away. âHe⦠does not want the Guild taking control of the outer city any more than we do, but⦠he also wonât move unless itâs worth his while.â
I drummed my fingers against the floor, another giggle escaping me as the piece fell into place. âAnd if we do?â
âThen he can attack many of the smaller groups. But, Lady Via, even between the both of us, we donât have enough people. I have heard thatââ
âTheyâll be keeping a few parties back at the Guild in reserve?â At Relâs surprised look, I added. âItâs what I would do.â
To my side, Electra grinned. âHeh, bet they wonât be expecting a prison break.â
Rel caught on quickly, eyes glinting. âSo what should I offer Arlo?â
âOh, him?â I waved a hand, as the last bits clicked home. âAnything. In fact, he can have it all.â
Both women blinked, looking at me in surprise.
âLady Via?â
âDonât worry about it, Rel. Youâve set everything up so perfectly, itâs like I was there myself.â I smiled. âI knew I was right to put my trust in you.â
Rel jolted, a flush of red working its way up her neck. âM-my Lady!â
âNow,â I said. âGet everyone ready. Weâll strike as one, the moment they think victory is in hand.â
Rel nodded. âTheyâll begin their attack on the Enchanterâs guild two bells before noon, if we begin thenââ
âNo, no.â I shook my head. Once again, both Rel and Electra looked towards me. âThereâs no reason to step in and help the enchanters of all people. In factâ¦â I smiled.
âIsnât it just the
chance to kill two birds with but a single stone?â
