Chapter 1423: The Grand Tortoise Formation

Even if William posed a massive mystery to her—even if his knowledge of secrets and techniques surpassed many scholars in her own world—he was still technically part of this lower realm.
He was confined by its physical restrictions and its notoriously limited resources. Of course, gaining high-quality loot, refined materials, and upper-realm spirit tools would be a golden chance he wouldn’t miss. He wasn’t just killing enemies; he was "harvesting" the resources he needed to grow.
Becky watched Lara work for a moment longer, her mind racing. She recalled everything William had done so far using the loot he had acquired from the upper realm masters.
From the high-grade materials used in his unique forging to the specific medicinal components he required for his strange elixirs, he turned the "trash" of the upper realm into miracles for the lower realm.
At some point, Becky made a silent resolution. She decided that when this was over, she would donate everything she owned to him—everything she had brought down from the upper realm.
Helping William with the most valuable and priceless items like ores, herbs, potions, elixirs, weapons, and gears would be highly appreciated by him.
She wanted to be on his good side, and she even harboured the ambition to make him owe her big time.
She never imagined that no matter what she did, in the end, and by the sheer scope of his plans, she would be the one ending up owing him big time! The "favour" she hoped to buy with trinkets was nothing compared to the destiny he was carving for them all.
As the girls cleared the first command group, they didn’t linger. They moved with a newfound rhythm, hunting down more of these "onion" groups across the sprawling battlefield.
At the same time, they continued their relentless sabotage of the spatial anchors. They managed to take down more portals, eventually reaching a critical mass where the enemy was unable to launch more portals than the girls could destroy.
All of this tactical disruption was reflected back on the battle at Lara’s city. Fang, fighting amidst the blood and dust of the frontlines, didn’t know exactly what was going on at the other side of the portals, but the results were undeniable.
Soon after a portal would open, it would flicker and close prematurely. The enemies who had been gushing out in a relentless stream started to arrive in an interrupted, stuttering manner.
This made it much easier for the city’s defenders to account for the reinforcements, and soon enough, Fang and Anjie managed to lead their forces to crush the newly arrived enemies before they could organise!
Within hours, it was clear that the enemy was struggling to open more portals and keep them operational for any significant length of time.
Seeing this made Fang, Anjie, and the other city masters realise that this was the golden chance presented by William.
Even if they guessed the specifics of his methods wrong, the outcome was the same: they pushed the enemies back toward the portals that kept flickering and vanishing like dying candles.
The city masters surged forward, taking back almost all the territory they had lost during the initial surprise of the second portal.
The situation that had escalated dangerously on all fronts was now heading steadily toward a conclusion favourable to William’s side.
As for William himself, he was finally getting closer to the peak of the fortress. He moved through the final layers of mist, oblivious to the "portal hunting" success of the girls below, focused entirely on the summit.
"I’m finally here," William muttered.
He stepped out into a grand space, one that looked like an entire world compared to the narrow, trap-ridden corridors he had kept passing through at every level he climbed.
The peak of the Lookman’s fortress was not a mere watchtower; it was a massive, open-air plaza. The area was spacious enough to accommodate thousands of masters, and it was indeed filled to the brim with elite enemies.
Unlike what Becky had suspected—that the leaders were hiding on the ground—the real minds leading the invasion were indeed up here in this plaza.
They were controlling the grand strategy, monitoring the battlefield down below from this high vantage point through massive scrying arrays.
"A group of portals... now I know from where all these enemies come from," William observed. He saw a large number of portals gathered at the centre of this plaza, standing like jagged obsidian tears just next to a big, ornate palace that served as the inner sanctum.
In front of all this, a group of large seats—elaborate thrones carved from dark stone—were placed in a semi-circle. There were twenty-five in number, though not all were occupied.
"You really are a headache, do you know that?"
A deep, resonant voice came from the direction of the thrones. One of the figures stood up, speaking in a calm, measured way as if he wasn’t standing in front of a death god who had just slaughtered his way through ten levels of defences. "You did great so far! I must ask... are you sure you are from this world?"
"What if I am not?" William didn’t hurry to move. Instead, he stood his ground at the edge of the plaza, crossing his arms over his chest. His fifty monsters stood around him in a protective crescent, their low, guttural roars sounding in a threatening way to all the enemies surrounding the plaza.
"Arrogance, overconfidence, and ignorance," another voice came from a different throne, a cold and sneering tone that sounded like it was mentioning their own previous weaknesses and mistakes, rather than William’s.
"It’s a typical trait for ignorant fools from this tiny world. Do you truly think you can stop us? You’ve brought your beasts to a slaughterhouse, boy."
"I can kill you; that’s something I’m sure of," William calmly said. While his voice remained level, his mind was anything but idle.
He was scanning everything around him using his spirit sense, peeling back the layers of the thick mist to see the invisible tethers of energy connecting the thrones to the plaza floor. "Using the Grand Tortoise formation to anchor the spatial rifts... not bad!"
