Chapter 403 Resolution

Now that their talk was finished, Avery and Serena headed back to where the others were waiting.
There were still several things that Avery was interested in knowing, but it was obvious that his mother had avoided touching on them.
’I really am curious about the other people that gained special powers like her, and what sort of abilities they possess. The only one she mentioned was the guy that uses metal abilities like telepathy and memory altering.’
Since he had a power of his own, Avery wanted to know how his stacked up against other people.
Truthfully, he did not think that his ability was all that impressive when just comparing it with his mother’s.
Seeing the flow of energy was certainly interesting, but it was not all that useful in and of itself.
It was only thanks to the bionic enhancements that Avery had received and the skills as a mercenary that he had cultivated that allowed him to capitalize on his power and use it to great effect during battle.
If he was just a normal, everyday person, it would not really do him any good.
Of course, for certain fields like engineering it could be very useful, but Avery had already decided to focus fully on his current path rather than think about past aspirations.
’Well, it still gives me a bit of a leg up on others. Maybe I can get better at using it with my mother’s help. If she’s willing to guide me.’ Avery thought as they made their way back into the main room.
When they stepped back in, the conversations going on stopped and everyone glanced towards Avery and his mother. All of them wearing curious looks on their faces. No doubt wondering what the two of them had been talking about for so long.
"I don’t want to have to a talk like this with you again. Be more careful next time and try to avoid making enemies against dangerous organizations that you can’t handle. I’m worried about you, but I also don’t want your father and I to be put in danger like that again. We’re just normal citizens. We’re not cut out for that level of excitement."
Serena made sure to put on her best stern face as she scolded Avery in front of everyone.
Immediately he understood that this was to sell the hasty explanation that he had come up with.
Fortunately, it did not seem like anyone was suspicious and saw through them, so Avery played along.
"I already told you that I would, mother. Was it really necessary to say all of that in front of the others?" Avery said, pursing his lips as if annoyed.
"Yes, it was." Serena said before turning towards Kasandra and Jasmine. "And I know that I can count the two of you will help keep him in line for me when I can’t."
"We try our best to prevent him from getting into too much trouble. Though he has a knack for doing so despite our warnings sometimes." Kasandra said, glancing at Avery with a knowing look.
"Yes, perhaps after the wedding, we’ll need to exert our authority as his wives a bit. Every time we think that he’s curbed his reckless streak, he does something preposterous again."
Hearing Kasandra and Jasmines scathing words, Avery hung his head.
There was really nothing that he could say in his defense this time. Not after the last stunt he had pulled where he let his rage overtake his judgment and nearly ended up killing himself by exerting his power that he hardly understood.
"I really do try my best not to put myself at unnecessary risk. Sometimes the situation requires it, and others I end up getting to heated and forget myself." Avery said, a lack of energy in his voice.
Fortunately, Kasandra and Jasmine did not push any further, knowing that there were occasions when it was necessary for Avery to take certain risks. It was only when he truly threw himself into avoidable danger that they became upset.
After things started to settle down a bi more, Urs got up from his seat where he had been chatting with Ezra and headed over to Avery.
For a moment, there appeared to be a slight tension between them, before Urs smiled widely and clasped his hand on Avery’s shoulder.
There was a heavy popping sound from the movement, and had Avery not received augmentations, he probably would have been knocked over and bruised by the force behind Urs’ movement.
"You’ve gotten a lot sturdier since the last time I saw you. I’ve also heard about your exploits since leaving the system. Sounds like you’ve been through the wringer already. But I guess that’s what’s necessary to reach five star in such a short amount of time. You’ve done a good job, and I’m proud to call you my student." Urs said, his lips turned up in a clearly pleased grin due to Avery’s progress.
"Thanks. That means a lot coming from you. And I also need to thank you for saving my parents. Without you being here, they probably would have been abducted without anyone realizing what had happened until it was too late. There’s really nothing I can do to make it up to you. But if there’s something you want me to do or get for you, I’ll do my damnedest for you."
"Glad to hear. There actually is something I’d like to request. Take me to the nicest restaurant in the system. You’ll be paying of course. As a rising star mercenary, I’m sure that you’ve got enough money to afford an expensive meal or two." Urs said with a smirk.
Avery knew that this was hardly enough to truly pay back Urs for putting his life on the line for his parents, but he understood that this was his master’s way of telling him that he was not particularly bothered.
"Sure, I’ll rent out the entire place and make it all you can eat for everyone here. Even the soldiers from Azade that came all the way here to protect my parents. That’s the least that I can do."
