Avery was getting into a good rhythm of bringing down their targets when an unwanted group came to interrupt him.
Though they did not seem to have much in the way of camaraderie between them, the different types of space monsters showed no hostility towards each other and were perfectly fine fighting together whenever they were nearby.
With Avery, Kasandra, and Liesel, having been thrashing the Fluem, one of the three Volmargars along with more than twenty Hinvieners set their sights on them.
Having a nearly kilometer long monster show up in front of them stop Avery and his companions’ momentum right in their tracks.
Olivia had tried to keep the giant space monster and swarm of much smaller Hinvieners away with a volley of attacks.
Yet the Volmargar had enough bulk to absorb the blasts without finishing, and the swiftly moving Hinvieners were difficult to hit precisely at range while occupied with other enemies.
Avery wanted to ignore these monsters and go around them to keep hunting the Fluem, which were the only real threat to the Intrepid and the team members he left behind to protect it.
Regrettably, the enormous Volmargar spewed out a wide spray of its flammable liquid and ignited it to keep Avery, Kasandra, and Liesel from getting away.
In the moment that they were forced to back off, the Hinvieners launched themselves forward with immense speed propelled by electromagnetism.
"Spread out and shot them away. We can’t let those things hit us." Avery said over the shared comms with Kasandra and Liesel.
Out of all of the space monsters in the system, Avery considered the Hinvieners to be either the most or close second most dangerous enemy. He had not encountered one of the spike ball monsters yet so he still could not judge them properly.
Once a Hinviener broke through a ship’s shields and attached themselves to its hull, that was basically it.
They would eat their way inside and start tearing everything apart.
For anything smaller than a corvette, a single one getting inside was basically a death sentence.
Trying to remove one was a major endeavor. The only two ways to really do so was either to blast it from inside the ship that had been breached or hit them from outside.
With either method being almost certain to cause major damage to the vessel in question even if the removal was successful.
After there would be a hull breach to still worry about, and nothing to stop another Hinviener from attacking. They truly were diabolic creatures, and Avery cursed the people that had developed them under his breath even if they were long dead.
While they were busy avoiding the sudden assault from other space monsters, the Fluem that they had been zipping around turned and attacked them relentlessly as well.
It seemed that Avery had attracted quite a bit of attention and ire from the space monsters here.
"I suppose that they’re beasts in the end. They can’t make proper decisions." Jasmine said, shaking her head.
When he focused fully on evasion, Avery was nearly impossible to hit. Especially while he was using his ability to pierce the flow of energy.
Kasandra and Liesel were likewise very capable, and they were receiving assistance from Avery in the form of suppressive fire and quick signals whenever an attack was close to hitting them.
As that went on, Jasmine had been communicating with the hunting squad and the rest of Avery’s company’s forces.
The monsters’ attention being drawn to the three of them, and their ever dwindling numbers gave the others more breathing room to act.
To start, a single medium sized craft burst through and started gunning down the Fluem with three powerful autocannons.
These weapons were similar to multicannons, but their rate of fire was slower and they shot larger projectiles.
This made them not particularly popular weapons for most people as hitting an enemy vessel consistently with them was far more difficult.
Against slower, less maneuverable space monsters like the Fluem though, autocannons were very effective.
Each shot tore into the monster’s body and penetrated far deeper than a multicannons round would.
"Die you stupid worms! Hahahahahaha!"
Avery could hear over the hunting squad’s communications the very violent words and barbaric laughing of Nali.
She was the one tearing through the Fluem that had turned their attention towards Avery, Kasandra, and Liesel.
The way she fought was like a berserker, but the style certainly suited her well and was something she had perfected over a long career.
Her ship was unbelievably fast thanks to its large main thrusters, and despite being very difficult to maneuver, Nali did not show any signs of losing control.
"You can really see her decades of experience in the way she flies. It’s hard to believe that she’s only a five star mercenary."
Avery was impressed by the veteran mercenary he was watching in action.
Since she worked alone, it was impossible for her to go up the ranks of the mercenary association any further.
Except, if one were to compare just her skills, she was likely as good as a six or even seven star mercenary.
Thanks to her breaking through the ranks of the Fluem, Avery, Kasandra, and Liesel were able to get a bit more space to maneuver.
"Jasmine, would you send out a warning to the others so that they don’t get caught up in this. I’m a bit tired of this Volmargar and its Hinviener buddies. So, I’m going to use something with a bit higher yield to get rid of them all at once."
Understanding Avery intentions, Jasmine sent the message out.
No one was currently in the blast radius, but they certainly backed up a bit when they heard what Avery was planning to do.
Once everything was ready, Avery broke away from Kasandra and Liesel and charged directly for the Volmargar that was going to serve as the main target of his attack.
"Now, lets see if that giant body of yours can absorb this." Avery said as he launched a phasic torpedo towards the space monster.
