Chapter 467 The Overrun System

After the initial interruption, the rest of the journey from the Ainelou System to the meeting point with the rest of the forces Zefield had assembled went smoothly.
During that time, Avery spent most of his days with Liesel.
The two of them were just starting out their romantic relationship and were using this opportunity to strengthen their bond.
Fortunately, the two of them got along well together, and were very compatible with each other.
Liesel enjoyed a wide variety of activities, but she was a mercenary to her core.
Almost every day, she and Avery would find themselves in the Intrepid’s simulators, either having dogfights with each other, or battling against swarms of enemies with impossible odds.
Some might have viewed this as something hardly romantic since it just seemed like they were training together.
Nevertheless, they both had a good time with it. Occasionally inputting impractical and wacky settings into their ships or enemies to spice things up.
Of course, they could not play around forever.
Eventually, they were closing in on their first destination, and after a long break, Avery came to take his place at the head of the Intrepid’s bridge.
When they came out of hyperspace, the viewscreen immediately displayed the rest of the fleet already assembled and waiting.
Due to the unexpected attack on Avery’s company and their two escorts, they were the last ones to arrive. With everyone else having been waiting around for an extra three days.
Within just a few seconds of their arrival, a transmission came in from Zefield.
He exchanged words with his wife Tuuali for around a minute for a full update on everything that had happened, before addressing Avery.
They were still a few days out from their destination, but the entire group would be traveling together from this point onwards now that there was far less of a chance of them being followed.
Once the call was ended, Avery had the helmsman bring the Intrepid towards the rear of the formation with the other mercenaries.
For this mission, their role was not primarily to fight, but act as support. That meant that for the most part, Zefield wanted Avery’s company to stay out of danger whenever possible.
"It sucks that I’ve got to leave, but my role here is already fulfilled. I suppose I’ll see you whenever I drop by whenever we come in for maintenance, repairs of resupply. Make sure to have something special waiting for me whenever I visit. I’m really going to miss the food here." Tuuali said as she boarded a shuttle and returned to Zefield’s vessel.
Around two hours later, everyone was ready to go, and the vanguard entered hyperspace. Around one minute later, the next group went.
This same process occurred another four times before it was Avery’s company’s turn to go.
They would be arriving a little after the other squads so that the area could be secured just in case there were hostile space monsters lurking around in the vicinity of the hyperspace exit.
Not long after everyone had left the system, the same hyperlane that Avery’s team had come through opened up again.
There was nothing visible to see even if someone else was around, however. And after around another three hours had passed, the hyperspace entrance Zefield’s assembled mercenaries had gone through opened up again for seemingly no reason.
...
Days of hyperspace travel went by swiftly, and soon Avery’s company was waiting in apprehension as they were close to reaching the system that was home to a habitable planet. And was also currently populated by multiple species of deadly space monsters.
There was no telling exactly what they would find when they reentered normal space. In the worst-case scenario, it might prove necessary to immediately retreat if the advance forces were being overwhelmed.
Thankfully, when the light of hyperspace faded away and the vast blackness of space dotted by thousands of bright stars came back into view, Avery’s team found that everything was peaceful.
While the system was overrun with space monsters, that did not many that they filled the entire place up. It was impossible for them to be everywhere all at once. Luckily, none had been nearby when the first squad had exited hyperspace.
Of course, the presence of so many ships was not going to go unnoticed for long.
"Sir, we’re picking up several signatures approaching at a high-speed."
The space monsters had noticed the intruders invading their home, and the first wave was already on their way.
It seemed to be a group of eleven of the type that showed some genetic similarities to Jalllas. Likely having been genetically engineered using the other deadly space monster as a base. Or at least, that’s what the more scientifically inclined members of Zefield’s team speculated.
Laser weaponry was not as effective against this type, so those that used physical ammunition moved to the forefront and prepared to intercept.
When the creatures came into view, Avery had the Intrepid zoom in on them.
They looked just like the holographic image that Zefield had showed everyone but seeing them in person really hammered home how unsettling and dangerous they really were.
Each one was enormous, and had dozens of mouths moving over its entire body.
It was not long before both sides were trading fire.
Despite being space monsters, these creatures could fire off balls of light with the same intensity as above average laser cannons.
They did not reach the same level as military weapons, but the sheer quantity of blasts still made them very deadly.
Lower ranking mercenary teams would find themselves easily wiped out just by this first wave. And they were only the welcoming committee. There were plenty of other space monsters lurking within the system.
Naturally, the elite mercenaries Zefield had hired were not going to be shaken by something like this.
With relative ease, the squad assigned to take care of this type of space monster engaged with the abominations and tore them apart with multicannons rounds and a few high-powered railguns. It was all over in less than a minute, with no serious damage done to any of the mercenaries.
A resounding victory for their opening battle.
