Chapter 425 Following the Trail of Evidence

"I wasn’t able to hear too much of their conversation, but I got one solid lead."
Kasandra had called Avery as soon as Rowan Listig’s vehicle began pulling out of the parking area with Bastion Cuach onboard.
Disguised as one of Regina’s guards, she had gotten in close and eavesdropped on their conversation.
The vehicle itself had impeccable soundproofing to prevent remote listening devices and proximity sensors that would pick up any bugs or trackers that were attached to its outer frame.
On the inside it also had an item that produced a powerful dampening field that shut down anything that was not registered to work within the vehicle.
This was why Rowan was so confident in spilling everything to Bastion. He did not believe that he had to worry about anyone on the outside hearing anything or there being any recording devices on the inside.
However, there was one thing that he did not account for, and that was Kasandra’s unbelievably sharp ears.
While she had not been able to hear everything in detail due to vehicle’s soundproofing, whenever either of them had raised their voices, she had been able to pick up what they were saying.
"Good job. I knew I could count on you." Avery responded proudly.
"But of course. When it comes to hearing. I’m the best in the galaxy. Now, here’s what I heard from their discussion..."
Smirking as Kasandra boasted about herself, Avery listened intently once she began relaying the information that she had overheard.
His lips turned into a frown when he heard that Kokkas had been killed and Rowan Listig had some people working under him disposing of the body.
Nevertheless, they were almost certainly still on the premises since it had not been that long yet.
’With all of the security, they’ll need to be careful sneaking out a dead body. I also doubt that they were able to bring the equipment necessary to reduce a corpse to ash with them. No way something like that would get past Regina’s guards and all of the sensors they have set up.’ Avery thought, organizing the information he had.
If it was just him and his team, they might have trouble tracking down the culprits aiming to get rid of Kokkas’ body.
Thankfully, the wedding venue was situated on the ground of Azade’s Chancellor’s estate. That meant that Regina could command an astounding amount of manpower for situations like this.
When he asked her to search into every vehicle that had entered for the wedding or had left recently, she assigned multiple teams to begin combing through the data.
Naturally, they searched for anyone that was connected to Rowan Listig, but the results came up empty.
There were only two vehicles that arrived under his name. One for him that had just left, and the other for his longtime guard who could not have been involved since he had been present in the wedding venue during the time that Kokkas disappeared.
"It makes sense that he’s not so stupid as to bring anyone connected to him for something like this. He most likely snuck in some personnel, or he’s had them planted for a while and activated them now." Regina said, a hint of frustration in her tone.
She then ordered her lead guard to do checks into any of the contractors here to provide goods for the wedding. While they had not been given permission to enter the building as there were already enough members severing as the chancellor’s staff, their transports were still parked on the premises nearby.
Right now, none of them should have left since they were waiting for their now empty containers to be returned.
"Also, check the backgrounds of everyone present that’s part of the guards or servers. I want to know if they or their families have any connection to Rowan Listig or any businesses he has major dealings with."
At Regina’s command, her guards began searching for any hits that matched the criteria that they had been given.
Obviously, this was a lot of data to go through. Fortunately though, it only took about a minute and a half for them to get a hit on some suspicious activity.
"Chancellor, we’ve found something. One of the off-duty guards who is usually stationed on the outer perimeter accessed one of the service entrances thirty-two minutes ago. That’s around the time that Kokkas left his station. The cameras in the area also picked up them letting in five unidentified individuals wearing masks. Their trails periodically goes in and out so we believe that they knew where the cameras were and how to dodge them. It was during one of these blind spots that we suspect that they abducted and killed Kokkas."
Avery started moving after listening to Regina’s lead guard’s explanation.
He signaled for both Ezra and Olivia to join him and sent a message to Kasandra to come and meet him.
"And what are you up to?" Regina asked, noticing what Avery was doing.
"Judging by what we’ve just learned, I’m betting that our targets have already left the premises. I hope that you’ll give my team permission to hunt them down. We’ve got some fast ships, and mine is equipped with a high-quality Emp weapon. We’ll be able to sizable and catch them without any casualties." Avery replied boastfully.
For a few seconds, Regina hesitated but eventually agreed.
"Fine. go on ahead and get ready to depart. I’ll make sure to have my security track them down quickly so that you can go and catch them. Also, some Keepers of the Peace will need to accompany you to prevent any problems. I’ll have some prepared to serve as escorts."
Now that they had permission, Avery told Ezra to take Olivia with him to his ship. Her corvette would be a bit too large and slow for this mission. Its larger size would lead to more drag within Azade’s atmosphere.
"Do you think that the three of us will be enough." Olivia asked.
"Yeah, we should be fine. Plus, I’ve already contacted Kasandra. She’s going to meet me at my vessel. We won’t be fighting an entire army, so just the four of us and whatever forces Regina sends with us should be more than sufficient."
