Avery weaved the Dauntless through the hail of bullets flying towards.
There were a few pings from the internal alarms that the shields had been hit, but it was nothing to be particularly worried about.
A bit of lost shield capacity was a suitable trade for closing in on a ship that was several times larger than the Dauntless.
Once he was in the position that he wanted to be, Avery began firing with his laser cannons and plasma launchers.
He was not quite at a distance where the balls of burning plasma were likely to land, but for now he just wanted to use them to manipulate how his opponent could move.
"Oh, they’re no bad."
Avery was impressed when he saw the frigate use its multicannons to disperse some of the plasma attacks coming their way.
It was easy to tell people to do so, but it was actually fairly difficult to execute unless the attacker was fairly far away.
Still, while the crew and commander of the frigate were competent, that did not make them an equal match to Avery.
Despite not having been behind the controls of the Dauntless in a serious fight for almost a month, he had already become fully adjusted to maneuvering his ship again.
"I think that I’d win given enough time, but I want to speed this up a little. So, I might as well cheat a bit." Avery said, shifting part of his focus in on himself.
An instant later, the world around him seemed to change as his perception became more honed and he could now visualize the flow of energy.
His enemy’s movements were no longer things he needed to use sensors and his instincts to anticipate. Everything was laid bare before him, and he could see the best path to cut through to make his approach.
Before attacks were even fired at him, he was dodging to the side to avoid them.
Without worrying about being hit by more than a couple glancing blows, Avery was able to slip below the frigate and hug the bottom of it.
Obviously, the weapon systems on that could still reach him aimed at the Dauntless, but Avery had no trouble darting around dodging them.
The frigate attempted to shake him off, but Avery kept his ship glued to them. Now that he was where he wanted to be, he was not going to let them escape easily.
With his weapons aimed up, he let loose and fired.
They were dealing with decently powerful vessels, so the frigate’s shields held up for a few hits from Avery’s plasma launcher.
Each shot did major damage of course, with the shield’s capacity rapidly depleting.
"That shield cell won’t save you for long."
Just as Avery was about to breach his opponent’s defenses, they had replenished their shields.
That was not a trick that they would be able to pull off again though. Once Avery broke through the next time, he would be able to finish them off.
Except, as he was about to continue attack, the Dauntless’ sensors alerted him to a powerful attack coming towards him.
Hastily, Avery zipped out from where he was under the frigate, and not a moment too soon.
Several beams of light impacted the spot he had been just a second ago and hammered into the frigate.
One of its own allies had attacked despite having to hit their lead ship in order to target Avery.
As soon as Avery backed off, the frigate unloaded on him with all of its weapon systems.
It had coordinated the attack with another member of their fleet and was ready to strike once the Dauntless had left its position under it.
"Whoa!"
Avery used his extrasensory perception again and accelerated his mind as quickly as he could.
Swiftly, he jerked the controls around and sent the Dauntless jolting all over the place to avoid being hit.
His movements would certainly appear to be unnatural and unsettling to anyone watching right now. The Dauntless almost looked like a video game character glitching around a map with the way it was being maneuvered.
This, along with the copious amounts of flares and chaffs he was releasing, made him very difficult to target.
"It almost feels like the ships themselves are stunned that I dodged all of that. I wish I could see the looks on the crew’s faces." Avery said with a chuckle after he had backed of a bit.
While he was retreating, he had gotten a few hits of his own as well.
His stern scatterguns had been fired four times each, and their powerful explosive ammunition had taken a large chuck out of the frigates recently restored shield capacity.
Considering the blast it had taken from its ally as well, its defenses were already hanging on by a thread.
Regrettably, Avery was not able to get in any other attacks, as he was now far too busy dodging.
The enemy fleet was trying to retreat, and since he had weaved through the battle to reach the enemy commander, that meant that every vessel trying to get away was coming directly towards him.
At the very least, their numbers had already been rapidly depleted, down to only twenty-four that were left standing. The rest had either been disabled or destroyed.
"They aren’t going to be able to get away so easily though."
Avery’s forces were already pursuing, and the Intrepid had just deployed its field disruption projector. None of their adversaries were going to be able to jump to light speed now to get away.
"Jasmine must want to end this now. That’s quite the aggressive move." Avery said, looking at the attack plan that had just been sent to him.
Not wanting to get caught up in any friendly fire, Avery disengaged from the battlefield and sat back to watch the show. Thankfully no one chased after him since they were trying to run away.
Around half a minute later, every member of his company and the two escorts from Zefield’s team had moved out of the way.
The group of thugs that had attacked them probably breathed sighs of relief when they saw this. Believing that they were not going to be pursued any further.
However, their fate was already sealed.
All but the Intrepid’s secret weapons were locked on and ready to fire a barrage that would crush their retreating foes in one fell swoop.
